Mahonie — premium page design and implementation plan

Prepared 2 October 2026. This is a locally working HTML prototype with shared images, styles, catalog and interaction code. It does not modify the live store or replace its commerce backend. Open index.html to browse every main category; open page-directory.html for the complete deliverable list.

1. Purpose, scope and page disposition

The primary goal is to make finding a suitable fragrance simpler while presenting Mahonie as a considered premium brand. Shopping pages lead with relevant products. Service pages explain the process and collect a project brief. Collection pages have room for material stories. Editorial pages provide readable guidance. All share the same header, navigation, typography, spacing, image treatment and footer.

This bundle covers the main categories plus meaningful missing collection, gifting, discovery, service and care destinations. It includes a shared detail template instantiated for all 54 audited live SKUs so the category grids have working local product links. Seven SKUs with placeholder copy are withheld from the public-facing grids pending catalog review; their detail files remain available for owner review. No launch dates, sales rankings, reviews, burn times, wax composition, lead times, minimum quantities or unverified inventory have been fabricated.

The legacy Glaza and Ceramique collection destinations receive separate concept pages as well as the six homepage collection concepts. These pages are not evidence that those ranges are available to purchase. Collection imagery is an existing AI-generated campaign direction, while item cards use photographs from the corresponding live product pages. Lemongrass Candle and Neroli Wax Tablets have no usable gallery photograph in the audited records (the wax-tablet gallery contains only platform placeholders), so they receive an explicit photograph-pending visual rather than another SKU’s image. The generic placeholder-copy Candle is also held out of the grid.

A missing page is not automatically a new marketing page. Old product slugs require SKU-owner decisions: restore the correct product, redirect to a genuinely equivalent item or return an appropriate retired/not-found response. Demo routes, a template newsletter endpoint and template About Porto content should not be rebuilt as customer promises. The route mapping records these distinctions.

2. Research and conversion rationale

The layout follows research-backed product-finding practices: multiple selections within a facet, matching result counts, a visible overview of applied filters, category-specific options and mobile filter controls. These are supported by Baymard’s filter UI guidance and product-listing research. The banner sets the atmosphere without pushing the product grid behind multiple editorial sections. The journal and reels modules follow the shopping area as requested.

Quick view is an optional preview with an obvious full-product link; it does not hide the complete product detail page. This responds to the distinction discussed in Baymard’s quick-view research. Comparison is limited to three items and uses only available factual fields. No artificial urgency, countdowns, fake review stars or fabricated bestseller badges are added.

Above-the-fold banners load eagerly. Below-the-fold images use native lazy loading, responsive widths and explicit image dimensions; this follows web.dev image-loading guidance. Native modal dialogs support Escape and focus containment. The custom mobile filter drawer has a close control, Escape handling, a focus loop and an inert background, informed by W3C modal guidance.

These decisions are intended to reduce friction. They cannot guarantee a conversion uplift. Validate with baseline analytics, real traffic and staged usability sessions before making quantified conversion claims.

3. Shared premium design system

  • Palette: near-white #FAF9F5, deep olive #35432E, ink #293126, muted gray-green #656A60, warm metal accent #9B8051. Avoid aged parchment textures and ornate frames.
  • Typography: restrained serif for major headings, clean system sans-serif for controls, specifications, product names and prices. No external font download is needed.
  • Layout: maximum content width 1,380 px; desktop side gutters 48 px, mobile 20 px. Desktop banner 350–420 px high; mobile 380 px with text over a readable gradient. Keep one meaningful visible h1 per page.
  • Category listing: left rail approximately 225–250 px; three product columns on desktop, three on intermediate widths, two on mobile. Product titles sit below images. Use consistent square source photography within a stable card frame.
  • Interactions: visible keyboard focus, reduced-motion support, native checkboxes, descriptive labels, explicit close buttons, generous main actions. Quick view stays visible on touch-size layouts.
  • Images: reuse the four approved campaign panoramas and existing category/editorial images. Campaign concepts must not be substituted for factual product thumbnails. Exported banner widths: 640/1,280/1,752 px; product widths: 320/640 px.
  • Shared navigation: Shop, Collections, Gifting, New Arrivals, Rituals; search and saved-product actions. Mobile has a separate navigation dialog. The bundle index is a category directory, not a replacement of the approved homepage.

4. Listing-page architecture and behavior

Sequence: shared header → breadcrumb → wide banner and brief category introduction → product-focused shopping area → scent-discovery help → journal → reels/rituals → shared footer. Never place long journal copy, Instagram widgets or giant trust panels before the product results.

The results area has a short editorial title, collection search, count, sorting, applied filters, stable product cards, comparison selection and progressive “Discover more” loading. The first batch contains up to 12 products; subsequent batches add 12. Product links open locally generated detail pages. Their purchase action goes to the corresponding audited live Mahonie product URL. The prototype does not pretend to add a real item to the live cart.

The rail supports minimum and maximum price, stock availability and category-specific facets from data present in the snapshot. Category/format appears on multi-format pages. Fragrance family and fragrance name appear when meaningful; reed diffusers also expose the genuine Wabi Sabi and L’étoile range names. Irrelevant one-value facets are suppressed. Counts reflect the other selected criteria, so shoppers can see potential matches. Selected values remain removable when the count is zero.

Logic: OR across selected values in the same facet; AND across different facets. Price uses final displayed price. Enter exact minimum/maximum values and select Apply Price (or press Enter) before committing the range. Minimum cannot exceed maximum. Search matches product name, format, scent label and SKU. Sort options are catalog order, price low/high and name A–Z. Newest, bestselling and ratings sorts require dependable source data and are not exposed yet.

State lives in the query string using repeatable facet keys, plus q/min/max/stock/sort. Browser Back restores a previous filter state. Sorting remains when filters are cleared. Mobile opens a drawer with a draft selection; Apply commits it and Close/Escape discards it. The Apply label previews the matching product count. Background controls become inert while the drawer is open. Shortlists are browser-local and persist when storage is available, with a safe visit-only fallback.

Empty states retain an understandable explanation and useful routes to Shop All. A shopper must never reach a blank grid with no way forward. Unsupported ranges use a deliberate empty state and stay conditional for launch; they should be hidden from live promotion until inventory is confirmed.

5. Data requirements for richer custom filters

The current live attributes are inconsistent, so the prototype uses a small, dependable set and provisional editorial family grouping derived from product names. These families need brand-owner approval before deployment. The exact name and SKU remain available for comparison. “Not specified” is used where the record has no reliable data. Do not interpret the grouping as a verified technical note pyramid or intensity claim.

6. Production integration contract

  1. Replace the dated catalog.js snapshot with Magento/store data, including approved attributes, stable IDs, final customer-specific prices, inventory and product gallery URLs. Keep local prototype IDs out of the production commerce API contract.
  2. Connect wishlist to the account backend only if account-synced persistence is required. Clearly distinguish device-local saved preferences from an account wishlist.
  3. Keep purchase actions truthful. A real Add to Bag requires the platform’s cart endpoint, quantity/variant validation, failure handling and live cart state. Checkout, payment and order flows are existing backend work, not static HTML substitutes.
  4. Connect project enquiries to the correct store endpoint or approved form service, with consent, spam protection, delivery logging and failure states. Today’s Download My Brief action only creates a local text file; no enquiry is sent.
  5. Replace interactive reel storyboards with approved playable clips. Use poster images, preload=none, user-initiated playback, accessible controls, transcripts/captions where relevant, and no autoplay with audio. The live website did not expose usable first-party video files in the audit, so no fake video button is presented.
  6. Approve product copy, family taxonomy, collections, gifts, care guidance, lead times and policies. Remove all placeholder entries from public inventory. Avoid health/antimicrobial or pregnancy-safety promises without substantiation.
  7. Route the flat prototype HTML files to their intended live paths using the route map. Resolve historic aliases deliberately. Never redirect all retired products to the homepage.
  8. These preview files intentionally carry noindex, nofollow. Remove that only for approved public pages at launch; keep search/filter/private/service-confirmation states indexed or excluded deliberately. Add canonical URLs, sitemap entries, breadcrumb and valid product structured data from verified live content.
  9. Confirm shipping, returns and contact details before adding them to shared shopping assurance components. The audited policies conflict, so this preview does not repeat unsupported shipping/refund promises.
  10. Test guest/authenticated shopping, form delivery, price/tax rules, zero stock, variants, errors and responsive layouts on staging. No live purchase or form submission was attempted.

7. Conversion measurement and acceptance

Instrument category_view, search_submit, filter_apply/remove, sort_change, product_click, quick_view, shortlist_save, compare_open, quiz_complete, enquiry_submit and real add_to_cart/purchase. Avoid collecting personal form values in analytics. Measure product discovery time, zero-result rate, product-click rate, add-to-cart rate and purchase conversion by device and source. Compare against a stable baseline; do not combine a simultaneous price/policy change with a claimed layout-only uplift.

Acceptance: every listed local file, link, image and fragment resolves; no page-wide horizontal overflow at 390 px; labels are readable; keyboard users can operate and close dialogs; filters return the expected SKU intersection/union; counts agree with results; URL restoration works; comparison is capped at three; saved state survives reload; services never claim to send an unsent enquiry; no invented discount/newness/review/stock claim reaches launch. Performance targets: field LCP <=2.5 s, INP <=200 ms, CLS <=0.1 at the 75th percentile. These are targets, not measured field results for this prototype; see web.dev’s thresholds.

9. Existing pages and retired destinations

Existing homepage, About, Contact, FAQ, policies, account, cart, checkout and authenticated order/address flows retain the dispositions in the production audit. This category-first bundle does not overwrite them or invent legal policies. Extend the approved system into those existing templates after the operational contradictions are resolved. The audit’s complete build/migration register is included as audit-page-plan.csv.

The broken-link register includes old product URLs, demo/template routes and three missing audio files. Restore a product only when its exact SKU and data are supplied; redirect only to a genuine equivalent; retire permanently discontinued resources appropriately. A design cannot recover unknown product history or reconstruct an absent meditation audio track. These remain explicit owner/backend decisions, not unnoticed links.

10. Handoff and launch sequence

  1. Review Candles, Reed Diffusers and Shop All on desktop/mobile; approve the shared visual system.
  2. Approve catalog corrections and the fragrance taxonomy, then supply the richer category attributes.
  3. Populate the genuine missing gift ranges and collection membership; hide unsupported routes from live promotion.
  4. Connect live catalog, cart, enquiry and video sources; apply approved routes/canonicals/indexing.
  5. Repair policy/contact contradictions and migrate the other existing templates under the same system.
  6. Run staging acceptance, link/resource checks and real commerce/form tests; then measure the launch with agreed analytics.
